Tom Milsom + Guests:
Porphyrophobia - Tom Milsom (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10 version)
From bandcamp:
“The last thing I really dicked about on before going into the studio to record Painfully Mainstream, this was recorded with a guy called JT, who played the guitar. I was going through a pretty intense (and brief) antifolk phase. This must have been mid 2009*.”
Porphyrophobia is a fear of purple, by the way… the guy it’s about has purple hair.
LYRICS:
When you’re looking for a someone
And then someone comes along
It never enters in your head
The thought that someone could be wrong
And they’ll tell you that you’re pretty
Put these thoughts inside your head
But you’re never really special
You’ll just realise you’re average instead
And you’ll try to wash away the crowd
Play your music far too loud
But everyone will just think that you’re irritating
People-hating
Just another Single Mother offshoot when you’re not
This lip gloss feels all funny, man I wish that I was shot
Through the heart with a dart, but I’m not, but I’m not, but I’m not.
And the someone that you know and love
Is sleeping at your place
And there’s something in his hair
And there’s something on your face
And you look him in the eyes
And then he’s playing your guitar
And then you want to hold him close
But then he’s getting in his car
And all the songs he played this morning
Were about people like me
That he’d fallen for or slept with
Or had gotten drunk and slept with, just like me
And I know I’m not that great,
There are things about you that I hate,
And I know that I’m annoying too
But mostly when I think of you
I feel like I am someone who is irritating
People-hating
Just another drunken lover, even if I’m not
Your hair is multicoloured and your eyes are all bloodshot
And I wish that I am special just like you, but I’m not, but I’m not.

Minimal II - Tom Milsom
I’ve never posted this before because to be honest I’m not sure if it was supposed to be 59 seconds or not, it’s very pretty and think it could have been much longer. It seems to just “end”.
Do any of you have this, how long is your copy?
Displayed on the website when I found him (In August in 2008 to mid-2009).
Downloaded with the album label Ephemera.
Friz’s Birthday Song - Tom Milsom (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10)
From bandcamp: “Another birthday song, another ray of cheesy synth sunshine. This was for my friend Friz. You might have seen him on twitter.”
From the original post:
From conception to finished song in 90 minutes. Happy 21st birthday Friz :)
LYRICS:
Nothing’s really different now that you are 21
You’re still a human being and you’re still your mother’s son
And father’s pride, And though you’ve tried,
You’re still the same inside.
Warm heart, and lovely face, and you’re quite good at drawing.
And think about it, you’re not really very old.
People three times your age are starting to go bald,
And you can run and jump and skip before you get a dodgy hip,
And we will stand by you exploiting all your skills at drawing.
Oh stephen frizzle, Oh for shizzle, you are closer to your death
But you’re no further from life.
And when one day, you pass away,
We’ll fondly think of you and say
“surprisingly few things rhyme with life.”
So you are 21, I hope it’s lots of fun.
Just think of all the things that you had never done
While you were twenty, don’t be blue,
Because they’re all ahead of you,
And if you ask us what to do, well we won’t know the answer,
Oh stephen frizzle, Oh for shizzle, you are closer to your death
But you’re no further from life.
And when one day, you pass away,
We’ll fondly think of you and say
“surprisingly few things rhyme with life.”

Another? Yeah the first one mentioned was Rebecca.
Animals (first version) - Tom Milsom (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10)
From Bandcamp: “A first version of Animals, before I decided to record Painfully Mainstream in a studio instead. Not much to say. What is up with that glockenspiel though. Seriously.”
Lyrics:
And what if birds
Fell in love like we do
The skies would be empty
Made of invisible winds
And what if fish
Found they had emotions
Suddenly our oceans
Would become blinded by things
There’s something to be said
For getting into bed
And covering your head
And waiting for whatever comes your way
and in the end
When you’ve lost all your friends
They’re never coming back
And if I tried
To tell you I loved you
Would you promise to try to
Feel the same way
I know I’m not
The only fish in the sea
But if it were just you and me
We’d take control of the sky

Found on tabondant:
I am a huge fan of Tom Milsom. However, there aren’t that many chords for his songs.
So most of the time I have to figure it out myself. Here is one of his songs, About Our
Universe, which is an awesome song. So here is what I got. I am 100% sure that these
chords are accurate. It is originally played on the ukulele. There are variations on the
intro and verses.
and if one day
the universe
fell in love with another universe
would they
in this new reality
fall together into one singularity
and on the tiny planet
everyone would be reeling
not considering that even universes have feelings
and there’d be millions of people
all condensed into one
and soon they’d be dead like the birds and the sun
and each one would think the center of it all was their head
and the world would collapse and then they’d be dead like me
like me
like me
like me
Wintersong (first version) - Tom Milsom (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10)
From bandcamp: “Seriously though, check out those recorders.”
A continuation of what he’d said on Summersong: “I was pretty unsatisfied with the home recordings of Animals and About Our Universe, and I began to experiment. This [Summersong] and Wintersong are both early (and pretty out there) home recordings of what would eventually become very different tracks on Painfully Mainstream.
Lyrics:
I can’t find my old friends now
They don’t like me anyhow
I just want to sit with you
And talk to you
And I know
That when the snow falls down
I’ll be alone again
Everything is out to get you
Ever since when I first met you
and when it subsides,
We’ll go outside.
And I know
That when the sun shines through
You’ll come around again.

Internet Love Song (first version) - Tom Milsom (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10)
From bandcamp: “Another one recorded in my bedroom, this is an early version of what would turn out to be a rather successful song.”
Please, please, please don’t go.
Please, please, please don’t go.
Circumflex underscore circumflex,
I love you so.
Please don’t block me,
Please don’t go offline,
I want to talk with you all the time,
brb, omg, lol.
roflmao. (x2)
We’ll pour our hearts out on the screen,
One line at a time,
And I’ll try to figure how to
Make you mine.
So please, please, please don’t go.
Please, please, please don’t go.
Though it’s close to midnight
And the conversation’s getting slow.
No don’t invite your friends,
I don’t want this moment here to end.
brb, omg, lol.
roflmao. (x2)
Enjoy!

Huw’s Film: the soundtrack - Tom Milsom (2007)
Tom has posted this three different times (that I’ve found).
When I discovered him in August 2008, Film Music 1, Film Music 2, and Film Music 3 - had no album, but they downloaded with the label:
Huw’s Film: the soundtrack
Later I found an older post of them (now gone) with:
“Huw music: Music hastily written in an afternoon to show my friend Huw Diprose what I was capable of, in case he needed any music for a film he is planning on making with me and a few other friends.
song one (comedy)
song two (church)
song three (eighties)”
He’s posted these comments about them on bandcamp:
“Soon after I got into the habit of staying after school to use the computers, I started to get a little more adventurous. These three bits of music were attempts to score imagined films. Film Music 1 presumably for a comedy or something…Film Music 2…this one’s probably set in some sort of church…Film Music 3…and this one’s probably for one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comedy films.”
You can now get them for free on: Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10
Tom Milsom - About Our Universe (Full Song With Lyrics)

I illustrated this song, with lyrics. the drawing is meant to be messy/cartoon.

This is really cute.
Summersong - Tom Milsom (First Version) (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10)
“I was pretty unsatisfied with the home recordings of Animals and About Our Universe, and I began to experiment. This and Wintersong are both early (and pretty out there) home recordings of what would eventually become very different tracks on Painfully Mainstream.”
We’re running out of water,
Summer’s turning out to be too hot,
For going except in shade.
Now the sun is rising everyday,
And I hate how it just stays that way,
The nights are too short these days.
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
I keep on thinking how mankind
Will shrivel up and burn and die
If we were fired into the sun.
The noise cuts off my head some days,
I wish that I was dead in ways,
I’m better now, I’m only one.
And that’s how life has got to be,
I need to get used to it
Six billion people think that me
Is more important than the rest,
And that’s just how it’s meant to be,
There’s people living who aren’t me.
Trivia: available on his old website for free in 2008.
Four-Foot Squirrel - Tom Milsom (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10)
“After this one, things were getting ridiculous and I just went to the damn studio to record Painfully Mainstream instead. My wandering was complete. This song has only ever seen the light of day as a cover by Hank Green*, who I think is the only person ever to have heard the original. UNTIL NOW.”
Tom, you lie LOL. (Granted this is a members only website, but still.)
*Maybe this is why people still call him Tom Milson? Oh, Hank…
Paradoxical Brain Cancer - Tom Milsom
From bandcamp:
“Big genre change. We’re still in 2008, or possibly early 2009, and I’m still looking for a way to record my second album at home. This was a different tack, inspired by the MIDI sounds on a lot of early They Might Be Giants recordings, and Logan Whitehurst’s work, which I was hugely into at the time, and basically ripped off massively. This song is about tyranny and propaganda!”
This was the only public way to listen to it until Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10 came out…
And the release date seems screwy… Myspace says January 2008, another post I have (of it by him, below) says
“July 2008”, and HE doesn’t even know LOL.
Dryflowers - Tom Milsom (Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10)
“This one’s a total anomaly. I was fiddling with Logic’s Sculpture instrument. That’s basically it.”
from Ephemera: Demos and Unreleased Stuff 2007-10, released 22 December 2010
But some of us had it before then, it used to be on his website, and it’s in the Blurred Boundaries Podcast
This is really nice.
